Dec 11, 2023Pendleton man wanted by police still missing
PENDLETON — A daylong search for a missing, distraught man was called off Wednesday after dusk without success. The search for Oakwood Drive resident Christopher M. Wright had prompted the Starpoint Central School District to go into "lock out" mode shortly after noon Wednesday.
When "lock out" is called, classes and activities go on as usual inside school buildings, but no one on the outside is allowed in. The district entered lock-out mode on its own after administrators learned police were searching for Wright, about five miles away from the campus.
Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were summoned to Wright's residence on the 5100 block of Oakwood Drive about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday. A relative requested a welfare check, indicating Wright, 44, was "despondent" and had threatened to harm himself.
Wright is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation by the sheriff's office, according to Undersheriff Michael Filicetti.
New York State Police officers turned up at Wright's residence with deputies.
"We didn't know whether (Wright) was at the residence or not. We also didn't know what he was threatening to harm himself with," Filicetti said.
The Niagara County Emergency Response Team searched Wright's residence and did not find him. A sheriff's helicopter and a state police K-9 unit were called in to search the surrounding area and police blocked traffic at Irish Road and Oakwood at Campbell Boulevard. Wendelville Volunteer Fire Company, which has an EMS crew, was later put on standby.
Wright is described as white, about 5-feet-8-inches tall and about 210 pounds. He has blond hair and blue eyes.
On Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement officers stood by at the Starpoint campus while students were dismissed after their last classes. Despite the lock-out, dismissal times were about normal and students were released in a "supervised, controlled" fashion, the district said on its website.
Filicetti said the sheriff's office supported the district's decision to go into lock-out mode "as a precaution."
