College Boreal offering early childhood and electrical programs

Oct 23, 2023Oct 23, 2023

Want to work in a high-demand sector? If so, the field of early childhood development is for you.

Collège Boréal offers two free pre-apprenticeship programs in the field: educational assistant (in Sudbury-Nipissing and Toronto-Mississauga) and child development practitioner (in London).

Pre-apprenticeship programs allow individuals with limited trade knowledge to take training and work placements to prepare them for entry into an apprenticeship. In contrast, a traditional apprenticeship program requires individuals to find a job with a sponsoring employer before taking courses in the classroom while continuing to work.

The educational assistant program is available online for the Greater Toronto, Sudbury and northern regions. This 37-week course provides the skills required to achieve level 1 in this area. In addition, several other certifications are offered through this program, including CPR first aid, self-esteem and job preparation.

At the end of the training, students complete an eight-week placement at a school. The child-care sector in the Toronto and Sudbury areas is experiencing high demand for skilled workers.

Register now for this free program, which starts on June 26.

The child development practitioner program is offered online for the London area. This 36-week program offers training by early childhood specialists. Classroom training provides the necessary skills to complete most level 1 courses.

In addition to the courses, the program includes three work placements to increase knowledge and gain hands-on, meaningful work experience in the job market. This program starts on July 3.

College Boreal, meanwhile, is offering a free pre-apprenticeship electrical program in Sudbury specifically tailored for women.

During the Women in Electrical pre-apprenticeship program, participants will receive 20 weeks of training to learn the skills required to achieve level 1 electrical training.

Several other certifications are available as part of this program, such as hoisting and rigging, lockout/tagout and working at heights. In addition, the program concludes with an eight-week work placement in the electrical field.

"Not only is this program offered at no cost to participants, but all safety equipment — boots, goggles and gloves — as well as manuals, are also provided free of charge," Christine St-Pierre, pre-apprenticeship co-ordinator, said in a release.

Pre-apprenticeship programs aim to encourage more women to enter the job market in traditionally male-dominated fields.

This program begins on July 17. To register, email [email protected].

Note that all these programs are in French only.
